I much like every other developer has cursed Microsoft for bringing the ever, non-standards compliant Internet Explorer Browser suite to the world. Fortunately the pain of dealing with Microsodt based browsers has lessened but some pain at times is undeniable.

When Microsoft first included jQuery as part of its .Net framework stack with Visual Studio and ASP MVC as of version x it was a move that was essentially unavoidable. Their own platformwasn’t as robust and jQuery and the ease, as well as rate it was growing was eating the competition like Scriptaculous, and Mootools alive. Continue reading

New Youtube channel!

After a long time i finally decided the time was right to setup a new youtube channel to put out the a lot more videos. I think its personally a faster way to blog, easier to understand and not to mention the SEO benefits.

I think that i will keep the content on the channel primarily web development based, and this time if i am going to be presenting at the next Seattle PHP meetup again i can always put it online.

Well do enjoy the first post, it is another jQuery and Google Maps video, as i have noted before, i am amazed at the the number of people who end up here searching for both jQuery and Google Maps but to keep them coming here is link to the youtube channel, and check out the post if you are looking for another plugin. Being a fan in the state of Washington isn’t what it used to be, the Sonics are gone, the Seahawks were terrible and the list goes on.

But the UW vs West Virginia Sweet 16 matchup in Syracuse sure looks like it may be a reason to celebrate. To add to that the UW were even the early featured on the NCAAB section of Yahoo! Sports. With the football looking like it is back on track too this could become a regular fixture one hopes. Continue reading

Blogging a real career in 2010

The last thing that you may hear when you think of blogging is, “Hmmmm this could actually be a career.”  According to the reliable wikipedia a blog is defined as,

A blog (a contraction of the term “web log“)[1] is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.

So essentially is the act (continuous) of of creating new content and adding to your weblog with frequent posts. Now with that said there are a couple of questions that arise:

  1. What does “Frequent” entail?
  2. Why does how frequent i write matter? Continue reading

Site Security and file permissions matter

The other day we were talking over a coffee about site security and was it really wise to trust plugins and without a second inspection, or a look at the code.

Now i am sure that many of us have gone and installed a plugin or two without actually looking at the code, but does it really mean we are at risk? I think the undeniable answer is yes, and this is for the very reason of the widespread, and almost unrestricted release of themes and plugins for WordPress. The allure of “free” themes and plugins often leaves the casual blogger or website developer at risk for being exposed by these various sites that offer “free themes”. Continue reading
